Huell’s pickpocketing played an integral role in Breaking Bad more than once, and this was a nice introduction to his character for Better Call Saul. For Breaking Bad fans, seeing Huell run into Chuck on the staircase was a clever implication on what to expect. Now for Jimmy’s second punch: Huell slipping the battery into Chuck’s breast pocket. All speculation best saved for next week’s episode, as Rebecca says she’ll be staying in town for a couple days. She’s off on tour frequently and he’s absorbed in the law above anything else. So who left who? Perhaps, their careers simply didn’t align and put a strain on their relationship. She obviously wants to be there for her ex-husband.
And when Rebecca arrives at the court room per Jimmy’s invitation, she seems frustrated by Chuck’s unwillingness to be helped. It’s clear that in the flashback he’s still wearing his wedding ring and isn’t sure if he should remove it or not for when she pays a visit. This episode doesn’t clear up any confusion on what the catalyst was for their split. Other characters seem to change subtly through their hairstyles and makeup, but, with Rebecca, it’s as if no time has passed at all since her and Chuck’s separation. Her hair is the same length and her outfit is similar. Rebecca’s appearance isn’t all too different than it has been during any flashbacks, and it’s a surprising detail. It’s perpetual one-upmanship, and Jimmy punches twice this episode: first, with Rebecca, and second, with Huell slipping the battery into Chuck’s breast pocket. But Jimmy knew his brother would testify because he knows how his brother works, just as Chuck knows how Jimmy works. Chuck definitely could have chosen not to testify against Jimmy, as Howard offered: “It’s a solid case.” Chuck didn’t have to be there, and if he hadn’t been then Jimmy’s plan would have fallen apart. We end the episode with his credibility seemingly in tatters. Even though Chuck is not the person on trial, his mental state is relevant to the claims he makes against his brother. In the end, Jimmy and Kim’s gambit works, and Chuck unravels on the stand, letting loose a litany of complaints about Jimmy that, taken together, sound like the ramblings of a madman. And benefit they do, as Chuck is driven, while on the stand, to greater and great heights of annoyance at and disappointment in Jimmy, who pulls some fairly nasty tricks, such as bringing in Chuck’s estranged ex-wife to rattle him, and secretly planting a phone battery on Chuck to prove the psychosomatic nature of his Electromagnetic Hyper-Sensitivity. Chuck’s hubris and resentment places him in a situation he could have avoided, leaving Jimmy and Kim to benefit from it. Against Howard’s objections, he insists on taking the stand as a witness against his brother and to provide the proper context for the tape, which he demands be played before the committee. But that fails to account for Chuck’s immense ego and sense of wounded pride. He has a signed confession stating that Jimmy broke into his house and destroyed his property. He has Jimmy’s extremely self-incriminating words on tape.

But this is more than just sibling rivalry, this is a serious legal matter. At stake is Jimmy’s law license and possibly his freedom, and Chuck is feeling a bit full of himself as he enters into the proceedings.
