The general tone of the film is light enough troughout to make it enjoyable. I'm not usually one for horror, but I was good with this.
However, some of the big names appear only in what amounts to no more than short cameos, among them Samuel West who only has a minute or two of screentime in the black and white introduction. Richard Roxburgh makes for a surprisingly good Count Dracula.
Also a plucky lady who looks good in action scenes. The cast is great, who doesn't enjoy Hugh Jackman? Beckinsale may not be the greatest dramatic actress around, but lovely she is.
Some welcome comic relief is provided by David Wenham who steals every scene he is in with his hilariously OTT performance as Van Helsing's sidekick Carl, a meek friar whose inventions and gadgets equal those of Q in the Bond films. Lots of gothic horror, exciting action scenes both real and computer generated, a fearless (and drop dead gorgeous) hero, a beautiful and very sexy damsel in distress, creatures of all descriptions (vampires, monsters, werewolves).
